Safeguarding
Safeguarding
At Laycock Primary School, we teach children how to stay safe whilst at school and at home. Not only do we focus on making safe and healthy decisions, we also support children to develop their mental health and know how to keep healthy and make healthy choices.
We recognise our moral and statutory responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of students. We endeavour to provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are respected and valued.
We are aware of an alert to the signs of abuse and neglect and will follow our procedures to ensure that all children are effectively supported and safeguarded.
The information on this page will summarise how we meet our safeguarding and child protection responsibilities, in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education.
Our Child Protection and Safeguarding policies and practices apply to all staff, trustees and volunteers who work in our school.
Mrs Canning, Head of School, is the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for our school.
Our Deputy DSLs are: Mrs Myers, Miss Binder and Miss Silkanovski. They attend specific training at least every two years to ensure that the school adheres to all school safeguarding procedures and policies.
Our Head of Safeguarding within the Trust is Mrs Canning.
Our Designated Trustee with responsibility for Safeguarding is Mrs D Bailey.
All staff in school undertake yearly safeguarding training that covers all aspects of safeguarding as well as specific training on PREVENT and online safety. Our knowledge is regularly updated through updates and bulletins and is a key focus of our professional development at Laycock Primary School.
We are also part of Operation Encompass – 2025-Operation-Encompass-Safeguarding-Statement
Operation Encompass Safeguarding Statement
Our school is part of Operation Encompass.
Operation Encompass is a national police and education early intervention safeguarding partnership which supports children who experience Domestic Abuse.
Operation Encompass is in place in every police force in England and Wales, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Gibraltar.
Children were recognised as victims of domestic abuse in their own right in the 2021 Domestic Abuse Act. There is a legislative requirement for police forces to share information with educational settings through Operation Encompass.
Through Operation Encompass the police will share information with our school about ALL police attended domestic abuse incidents which involve any of our children who are related to either of the adults involved in the incident. This sharing of information will occur PRIOR to the start of the next school day. The notification will inform us about the context of the incident and will include the Voice of the Child.
A Key Adult (DSL) in school has completed the free National Online Operation Encompass Key Adult training; they will cascade the principles of Operation Encompass to all other staff.
All staff have had training about Operation Encompass, the prevalence of Domestic Abuse and the impact of this abuse on children. To raise awareness of Operation Encompass we display the posters within school and share information with parents. Operation Encompass notifications are stored in line with all other confidential safeguarding and child protection information.
As a school we have also discussed how we can support our children who are experiencing Domestic Abuse on a day-to-day basis and particularly following the Operation Encompass notification.
