Reception

Welcome to Reception Class

The teacher in Reception is called Mrs Davies and Miss Haigh is our Apprentice Learning Support Assistant. Mrs Davies is also the SENDCo for Laycock Primary. We have a lovely small reception class and plenty of space in the classroom to learn and play.

Learning in the early years is very special. The children follow the early years curriculum and apply their learning through games and play. The classroom is set out into different areas so that learning can be focused on particular skills and stages of development.  You can read more about the early years curriculum by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page.

In Reception, there is a huge focus on phonics and early reading skills. Parents can help us with this by enjoying stories together at home. We ask that parents listen to their child read each day and complete their reading journal. The journal is a great way of letting your child’s teacher know of anything your child might have found tricky so that it can be picked up in school.

We are lucky enough to have a great outdoor area to learn in. We would recommend that your child wears sensible shoes for riding bikes and always has their coat in school. With all this outdoor play, it is helpful if your child could have a set of spare clothes (non-uniform is fine) in school just in case!

Children in reception get a free school dinner and up to the age of 5, they also get free milk each day. If you would like to know more about this, please speak to your class teacher. Each term, the menu for school dinners is put on the website and can be viewed here.

Our long term reception curriculum plan can be found on our curriculum page

Finally, we send lots of information and messages home via ClassDojo and ask parents to download the app so that they don’t miss anything. If you need any help with this, please speak to your class teacher.
